June 12, 2021, Saturday, East Harbor
We came to Vermilion yesterday to spend the weekend at anchor. The weather appears to be favorable for the weekend with the only risk being a random thunderstorm or shower. We came up on Friday to go to lunch with the Karpinskis and Gravinos. We went to the Treasure Box 2 restaurant in Freemont, Ohio. It is quite an eclectic place. They have fabulous fried perch and a pound is only $21. A pound is a lot of fish! It was our first trip there, and we loved it. Kerry raved about how good it was, which is unusual for her with perch. Julian is getting ready for a big operation to remove part of his colon next week so we were happy to see he and Lynn and be able to wish them well.
Today started with coffee in the club house with Jimbo at 8:00. I had an apple fritter from the ASPS PIB rendezvous last week that we shared. Jimbo was in heaven. Afterwards I helped Jim route the edges of 4 big poles that will be used to mount new wifi antennas down the docks. Wifi at the docks is really poor and we are making an effort to improve it.
It took a long time to get Annie ready to leave - washing the boat, fuel, pumpout, water, etc. Kerry cut up a bunch of fruit for the weekend too. We were ready a little before noon. The trip over was uneventful. We had a wave pattern from the NE which caused Annie to roll a little, but it was not really too bad. We anchored twice before we felt comfortable. There are so many weeds in the harbor this year, perhaps because the lower water level is letting more sun shine on them, encouraging growth.
We may be joined tomorrow by some people from the ASPS who dock at Battery Park, weather and water depths permitting. I did bring the kayak and plan to inflate it tomorrow morning. We had nice conversations with Anne, Marty, Peter and Marianna, and President Steve from Venice that passed the afternoon. We are trying to nail down a cruising schedule for the season, the highlight of which will be a river cruise with the Orro's to Port Huron.
We really did not have a defined happy hour today. We went right from the afternoon into cooking dinner, which consisted of barbequed ribs and a fresh tomato salad. I took a refreshing shower after dinner while Kerry cleaned up from dinner. I could not interest her in a shower. The cotton wood trees are shedding their little cotton balls, making it almost look like little patches of snow on the water.
